The Catasauqua Fire Department is warning members of the community to stay away from a section of Third Street in the borough and neighboring North Catasauqua after a large sinkhole formed in the middle of the road Friday night.
The sinkhole is in the 700 block of Third Street, on the border between the two municipalities. Third Street is closed between Chapel and Walnut streets. Brian Bartholomew, vice president of Catasauqua Council, said the sinkhole also caused a water main break and two cars needed to be towed away.
Photos showed the sinkhole swallowed a street sign. A van nearly fell into the sinkhole as well.
Fire officials warned that water and gas services to both boroughs may be affected by the sinkhole. People whose water was affected were given water bottles by the fire department, Bartholomew said. The department said as of Saturday afternoon, it didn’t know how long it would take to repair the road. However, Bartholomew said borough crews would be at the sinkhole at 7 p.m. Sunday to work on fixing pipes but will not be able to get cement to backfill the hole until Monday.
